چکیده

Excavation of a well-preserved stretch the rampart Antonine Wall east Watling Lodge, at Laurieston, allowed for first micromorphological study its earthen building materials. This revealed that core, as well cheeks, were constructed in layered courses turf blocks – but sourced from different grasslands. The evidence differs macroscopic observations made other sections this area where material had been interpreted representing loose earth core with clay cheeks. Our results show even when characteristic striped indicative are not visible field, thin-section analysis can confirm use intact soil remains grassed surfaces. It now seems possible variation between materials eastern and western sectors may simply be due to types used, varying subsoil composition topsoil formation, differences landscape management survival vegetation. Combined field recording identify Roman practices, our section Laurieston also shows care was taken construct level, well-draining base avoid slumping moisture build-up. Further excavations elsewhere along needed whether more extensively used than so far anticipated sector could possibly have built completely turf. Such conclusions would suggest much standardised construction process extensive grassland exploitation considered up until now. While demonstrate importance understanding UNESCO World Heritage site, interdisciplinary approach wider relevance research on linear earthworks geographical chronological settings.

Nearly all bacteria contain a peptidoglycan cell wall. The peptidoglycan precursor molecule is LipidII, containing the basic peptidoglycan building block attached to a lipid. Although the suitability of LipidII as an antibacterial target has long been recognized, progress on elucidating the role(s) of LipidII in bacterial cell biology has been slow. The focus of this review is on exciting new d...

Another brick in the wall of needs for invasive ventilation?

Ventilator-induced lung injury and ventilator-induced diaphragmatic dysfunction are major complications in mechanically ventilated patients with acute respiratory failure. Invasive ventilation adds a further burden by increasing the risk of infections. An approach that protects both lung and diaphragm is pivotal. Mirabella and colleagues compared conventional controlled ventilation with a mode ...
